If you have a community-wide October Halloween or Fall Fest Drive-Trough Celebration that you’d like to publicize here, please email your Go Milpitas guide, Ann Zeise. Please leave the Milpitas address of your “haunted” yard or driveway or parking lot. Since such displays may be going up early, if you wish visitors over a range of dates, include those dates. If you have a time range when the display will be on, include that. Leave me your phone number or email address just incase I need to contact you with questions regarding your post.

This page will be linked in the Events Calendar in October, so people will be able to read and use this page and Google maps to locate your haunt. I will only show your address and not your name, unless you specifically write that you want me to spell it out.

Pests & Control

Who to call if you are being bugged by some insect or animal pest in Santa Clara County. How to avoid attracting pests to your property.

Oriental fruit fly
Milpitas is in the fruit fly quarantine area. County of Santa Clara Division of Agriculture urges residents in the quarantine area not to move homegrown fruits and vegetables from their property. These fruits and vegetables may, however, be consumed or processed (e.g., juiced, frozen, cooked or ground in the garbage disposal) on the property where they were grown. Affected residents may also dispose of homegrown fruits and vegetables by double-bagging and sealing them and placing them in their regular trash bins, not in bins designated for organic material and food scraps.

Small Bees
A family-run business. He rescues honey bees infesting homes and other unwanted places, and brings them home, makes sure they are healthy and content. She turns the honey and the comb into products to be sold at local farmers’ markets. Best parts: you get a lesson about honey bees, and a good chunk of the honey comb! Located in Los Gatos, but close enough to Milpitas.

Local Pests

These are commonly observed pests in Santa Clara County.

Coyotes
Because coyotes are so adaptable, problems may arise if they become comfortable seeking food or living in suburban and urban neighborhoods.

Domestic Rodents
Roof rats, Norway rats, mice and other rodents constitute an ongoing problem to residents in Santa Clara County. Rodents, especially roof rats are common co-inhabitants in our homes, regardless of socio-economic boundaries.

Dust Mites
Dust mites are an ever-increasing problem that has no silver bullet fix, but there are ways to combat the steady infestation. Our web site was created with the purpose of educating the public through articles and news about dust mites.

Town Cats
Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) has proven to be the most humane and effective method of managing feral cat populations.

Feral Pigeons
The list goes on and on: the feral pigeon has contributed to civilisation in more ways than any other species of bird. So how – and, perhaps more importantly, why – has it become such a pariah?

Mosquitoes
Management of mosquitoes in Santa Clara County presents an ongoing challenge due to the variety of developmental sites and their proximity of urban areas.

Pocket Gophers – UC Pest Management Guidelines
Pocket gophers often invade yards and gardens, and feed on many garden crops, ornamental plants, vines, shrubs, and trees. They are classified as non-game mammals by the California Fish and Game Code.

Starlings
Starlings are non-native invasive species and are not protected by The Migratory Bird Treaty Act, which means that federal law allows humane destruction of adults, nests, eggs, and young.

Potential Pests

These are a threat, but have not reached our county yet, though they may be in other parts of California. If you suspect you’ve seen one of these, call one of the agencies fast!

Africanized Honey Bees
No, these haven’t reached Milpitas yet, but they are in Southern California.

Glassy-winged Sharpshooter
A very fine mist or a whitish, powdery coating on leaves or fruit may indicate heavy glassy-winged sharpshooter feeding. Large, yellow sticky traps are commonly used in orchards to monitor for the adults.

Red Imported Fire Ants
These red ants originated in South America and infestations have been recently discovered in Modesto. These destructive and aggressive ants will bite.

Letter: An-Jan Feed and Pet Supply will be missed

September 15, 2023
Dear Editor,

An-Jan Feed and Pet Supply will be sorely missed.
An-Jan has been my family’s go-to since 1984 when I moved to Milpitas.
We have used their vet services, and bought all of our cat, dog, bird, and lizard supplies from there over the years.
Aaron has been at An-Jan as long as I can remember. He has always been friendly, professional, and knowledgeable concerning our needs…even the time our newly acquired dragon lizard and the crickets we fed him were covered with ants one morning! He knew exactly what we needed to do to prevent another episode. Whew!
An-Jan and Aaron are synonymous.
An-Jan Feed and Pet Supply will be sorely missed.
We wish Aaron the absolute best!
Any employer would be lucky to have you!

Mission/Rancho Era – 1700s

Milpitas was along the route taken by the De Anza Expedition, and between Mission San Jose and Mission Santa Clara. There is a sign posted near the intersection of Calaveras and Milpitas Blvd., near City Hall, showing where the expedition passed through.

Alviso Adobe Park
The adobe’s history can be traced back to 1834, when its original owner, José Maria de Jesus Alviso, penned a petition describing what he had built: “two walled houses,” outside of which were 600 cattle, a 600-vine vineyard, and an orchard bearing 60 fruit trees. The function of the petition was for Alviso to gain formal ownership of the property, which he cited as “the place named Milpitas.” Tours are offered at 1PM, 2PM, and 3PM on the second Saturday of every month. You can RSVP here. If you have the app AdventureLab on your smart phone, there are 5 clues outside at this location. There is also 1 geocache.

Domestic Violence Incidence Leads to Chaos Near Spangler School on Monday

On September 10, 2023, at about 7:05 PM, Milpitas Police Officers responded to the report of a domestic violence incident at a residence on Spence Avenue. When officers arrived, they saw the suspect in front of the home. When the officer attempted to detain the suspect, he ignored the officer’s commands to stop and ran into the side yard of the residence. Additional officers responded to establish a perimeter around the home, and they deployed a drone to search the area for the suspect.

The surrounding area, including the nearby Spangler Elementary School, was checked immediately after the suspect ran from officers. Based on all available information at the time, officers believed the suspect ran into the house. Officers made several loudspeaker announcements and phone calls to the suspect to communicate with him and gain his cooperation. Officers believed the suspect was in the home and ignoring them.

Officers presented the facts of the investigation to a Judge who authorized a warrant for the suspect’s arrest. During the investigation, officers developed information that led us to utilize the SWAT team to serve the warrant. Due to the late hour and to serve the warrant in the safest manner possible for the suspect, officers, and community, the SWAT team waited until daylight hours to enter the home and serve the warrant. At about 7:23 AM, our SWAT team served the arrest warrant however the suspect was not located. It was later determined that the suspect did not enter the home after fleeing from officers.

To ensure the safety of the community, officers were deployed around the residence during the entirety of the incident. Although the presence of police activity can be unsettling, the Milpitas Police Department is committed to utilizing all available staffing and resources to maximize the safety of our officers and our community.

We would like to thank our public safety partners at the Milpitas Fire Department and the Sunnyvale DPS for their assistance during this event.

Anti-Recycling Myths
Commentary on “Recycling is Garbage” (John Tierney, New York Times Magazine, June 30, 1996). Authors: Richard A. Denison, Ph. D.; John F. Ruston, July 18, 1996.

Five myths about recycling
Brian Clark Howard is a senior digital writer and editor covering the environment at National Geographic.
April 20, 2018
From the kitchen table to the editorial pages, people have been debating the merits of recycling for decades. Does it really save energy and money? Can I recycle that yogurt cup or juice box? At the same time, recycling technology and global markets have evolved quickly, leaving some consumers confused or stuck in old, outdated ways. A lot of myths persist about those blue bins. Here are some of the most common.

How Big Oil Misled The Public Into Believing Plastic Would Be Recycled
September 11, 2020
NPR and PBS Frontline spent months digging into internal industry documents and interviewing top former officials. We found that the industry sold the public on an idea it knew wouldn’t work — that the majority of plastic could be, and would be, recycled — all while making billions of dollars selling the world new plastic.

Bottle Bills & Other Reform

State Senate passes landmark Bottle Bill reform to shift responsibility to beverage distributors
June 3, 2021 SACRAMENTO – The California State Senate today passed landmark legislation to reform California’s antiquated Bottle Bill and to hold beverage distributors responsible for increasing the amount of containers that are recycled. SB 38 will transform the current broken system that has resulted in plummeting recycling rates, more containers in our landfills and consumers unable to find convenient locations to redeem their bottles and cans. The bill now goes to the state Assembly.

We were the first to do it, we’re the most innovative at it, and we’re the first in the Western U.S. to earn LEED Certification, verified through the Recycling Certification Institute, the nation’s top independent industry auditor. That’s what we mean by “Greenovation.”
