It's on your money ("E Pluribus Unum"), it's in the courts ("amicus curiae" briefings), you use Latin abbreviations when you're writing ("dogs, cats, gerbils, capyberas, etc"). It might even be there on that old TV that you're watching, if you've got a Magnavox. You just can't get away from it.

Reading

Fairy Tales in Latin: Fabulae Mirabiles
by Victor Barocas
This is a delightful collection of twelve well-known fairy tales rendered in impeccable Latin. The familiar content and avoidance of complicated syntax or difficult words make them a fine choice for intermediate students.

Harrius Potter et Philosophi Lapis
(Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Latin Edition)
by J. K. Rowling, Peter Needham (Translator)
This is a smooth and clever translation, perfect for the person who wants an enjoyable quick read to refurbish fluency in the language. The bright style of the original is preserved, and it is obvious that the translator has his own sense of humor as well, playing with words and phrasing without sacrificing accuracy. This book would make an excellent supplementary text for students at about second-year level.
