Deschooling

Stop thinking schoolishly. Stop acting teacherishly. Stop talking about learning as though it's separate from life. ~ Sandra Dodd.

All Right, You've Made the Decision to Homeschool. Now What?
Deschooling. Your kids not trying to drive you nuts. Rather, they're unconciously letting you know they need time to decompress. To flush that unhappy part out of their system, take a long deep breath, and get their confidence back.

De-schooling
If your child has had problems in school such as bullying, or exam stress, it's particularly important to take time to relax together as a family, to read, to discuss issues, to talk about goals and ambitions, and to think about what education means to you.

Deschooling for Parents
Stop thinking schoolishly. Stop acting teacherishly. Stop talking about learning as though it's separate from life. By Sandra Dodd.

Deschooling Gently
If you can't go cold turkey, and you just can't imagine a life without at least a little of the school ways that are a part of our culture, don't give these things up. Don't turn away from what you've always known. By Tammy Takahashi.

Deschooling Society
The "deschooling" idea comes from this essay by Ivan Illich. Deep, philosophical essay, but essential reading to truly understand homeschooling.

Detox
Someone once said that beginning to homeschool was like moving to another country. In many ways, they were right. By Barbara Frederick, NHEN

Homeschooling 101: Why We Do It
NPR did a three-part series about homeschooling in February 2001. Here you can read and listen to these family's stories.

My expectations were high when when we started
When we started out, I tried the school at home version and became so stressed that we took 3 months off for vacation. In that 3 months time, I learned so much. The boys learned so much! Dotchi, group member. (You'll need to sign in with your Yahoo Group ID and password.)

My Homeschooling Mistakes
Parents who are new to homeschooling share certain characteristics. They want to provide a great education for their children, and they are willing to go that extra mile for them. However, they're also very uncertain - if not actually terrified - about the homeschooling road that lies ahead. By Isabel Shaw .
