Common Cold, Flu

Cold and Flu Facts
Influenza, or the flu, is a respiratory infection caused by a variety of flu viruses. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 35 to 50 million Americans come down with the flu during each flu season, which typically lasts from November to March.

  • Colds are minor infections of the nose and throat caused by more than 200 different viruses. Rhinovirus is the most common cause, accounting for 10 to 40 percent of colds. Other common cold viruses include coronavirus and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).
  • A cold may last for about one week, but some colds last longer, especially in children, the elderly and those in poor health.
  • In the United States, colds account for more visits to the doctor than any other condition.
  • Adults get an average of two to four colds per year, mostly between September and May.
  • Young children suffer from an average of six to eight colds per year.
  • Colds are highly contagious. They most often spread when droplets of fluid that contain a cold virus are transferred by touch. These droplets may also be inhaled.

Many of our parks weave together, providing ways for pedestrians and bicyclists a way to move between homes, schools, and shops without having to be on busy roads.

Challenges During Covid

Can’t meet in public spaces, such as restaurants.

Person seeking help can’t avoid their abuser who would be constantly monitoring them.

Zoom fatigue, especially with children. Therapy became just too much. Isolation was tough for kids. Challenge to engage for therapists.

Shelter capacity dwindled. Some had to go to hotels. They didn’t get services going to those in shelters. Clients were often tech challenged.

Hard to get empathy across on Zoom. Staff of services had to learn how to build rapport via Zoom. Disconnect has been tough for everyone.

Financial problems greatly increased. Problems paying rent, buying food.

Different populations affected differently by COVID19 and job losses and food insecurity.
