Lake Tahoe

The upcoming meeting of the Milpitas Historical Society, on Wednesday, October 10, at 7:00 pm will take place in the Children’s Activity Room of the Milpitas Library, 160 North Main St. This meeting will feature a beautiful and interesting film about “The Lake of the Sky,” the translation of the Washoe name for Lake Tahoe.

This film, narrated by Leonard Nemoy, tells us about the first inhabitants of the lake area, the Washoe people, and how a fierce blizzard trapped a starving pioneer expedition in 1844, some of whose climbed a peak to scout a route and beheld, to their amazement, the largest and one of the most beautiful lakes in the west.

Decades after that, as the all-too-near Comstock Lode of silver was discovered, Americans rush to take over and nearly destroy the pristine beauty of this area with mining, logging, and later fancy mansions and summer retreats for the very rich, all of which led, over time, to the Tahoe we know today.

Our meetings are free and all are welcome. Hope you can join us then.
