Two Milpitas High teachers let go after accusations of inappropriate behavior toward students

Maria Denise Cuenca
May 18, 2023

Throughout the year 2022, investigations of two Milpitas High School teachers were conducted due to allegations of inappropriate behavior toward students. The two teachers investigated were Toby Anderson and Lance Brookner. Toby Anderson was a Life Skills and World History teacher at Milpitas High School and mostly taught 9th- and 10th-graders, while Lance Brookner taught Principles of Finance, Accounting, and Marketing/Customer Service to 11th- and 12th-graders. Through a public records request to MUSD, The Beat was able to gather information on the investigations of both teachers. Both instances are completely separate from one another and have no major correlation.

Developer of Sunnyhills Apartments renews HUD contract for 5 more years

Residents of the Sunnyhills Apartments can breathe a sigh of relief – at least for the next 5 years.

JMK Investments, the developer of the historic apartment complex, recently renewed the Housing and Urban Development (HUD) contract until 2028, ensuring that 149 of the units there maintain subsidized housing status.

Weeks ago, things looked uncertain…

Residents of the Sunnyhills Apartments spent recent months launching a petition and asking the City of Milpitas for support in retaining their affordable housing.

The City had conversations with the developer, leading to a renewed contract of 5 additional years, which was approved by HUD on March 7.

Milpitas City Hall is in a state of civil war

We had a moment there – it came and went. But for like half a second, it seemed like things could go so well…

Last December, Carmen Montano became the 18th Mayor of Milpitas. Garry Barbadillo, in the course of campaigning for his City Councilmember seat, recalled a time when the Milpitas City Council routinely voted 5-0. In other words, everything they passed, they passed unanimously. I liked the message. It pointed to an age of solidarity, of common sense, of putting the people’s business before the City’s business.

That age is not the one we’re living in.

Earlier this year, the new Council voted 3-2 to discontinue City Manager Steve McHarris’s contract. Montano, Barbadillo, and Vice Mayor Evelyn Chua voted Yes; Councilmembers Hon Lien and Anthony Phan voted No.

Mil’s Diner going strong under new ownership

ByEric Shapiro, The Milpitas Beat, March 3, 2023

Mil’s Diner is a legendary yet humble Milpitas mainstay, a cozy mini-mall-based nook offering a warm atmosphere, a friendly staff, and heaping portions of mouth-watering food. Located at 36 South Abbott Avenue, the restaurant recently came under new ownership, and in the course of doing so it had the good fortune of seeing very little change…

The new owner, Teri Lane, just took over at the start of January 2023. Before then, she was a Mil’s server for 18 years. But she wasn’t even their longest-running server; she points to a current waitress, Jeanine, who’s been there since before the previous owners were.

“Everybody’s long-term here,” Teri shared in an interview with The Beat. “All of the cooks have been here longer than me.”

Suits on and by Michael Tsai vs School Board

Two Milpitas Unified school board members file police reports against Michael Tsai over “harassing messages”

By Rhoda Shapiro & Eric Shapiro, August 31, 2022
“We’re no longer in a state of emergency,” Yip-Chuan said, explaining the reason for her vote in an interview with The Beat. “We’re all back in person.”

Following the meeting, Trustee Tsai texted the three board members who didn’t vote with him this message:

“Think very carefully about what you are doing. Trust me, you should hope that nothing you do causes me to lose my race.”

He fights back…

Michael Tsai, Milpitas School Board Trustee

I’ve received a number of deceitful, threatening, and abusive messages from other board members and their cronies over the years. I’ve patiently endured and given them the professional courtesy of giving them privacy and not publishing their harassing messages, despite being told by multiple people that I should go public about the lies and workplace bullying.

Maybe I should have. I technically still could.

Chick-fil-A creates Controversy in Milpitas because of anti-LGBTQ stance

Chick-fil-A opening in Milpitas on June 16

By Rhoda Shapiro, June 13, 2022

This Thursday, June 16, Chick-fil-A will be opening in Milpitas. Located in the Town Center at 755 E Calaveras Blvd, the new restaurant will be operating Monday-Saturday from 6:30am-10pm.

Chick-fil-A’s Owner Is Bankrolling Hate Groups Targeting Trans Kids

“They’re doing hardcore, extreme stuff, but they make it seem like it’s a bunch of soup kitchens.

Nearly a decade after Chick-fil-A was called out for donating to anti-LGBTQ+ groups, its owner is still funding efforts to discriminate against the community.

According to a new report from The Daily Beast, an organization called the National Christian Charitable Foundation (NCF) is bankrolling many of the groups hoping to kill the Equality Act. If signed into law, the landmark legislation would mandate equal protections on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity in all walks of life, including health care, housing, education, and public accommodations.

The Daily Beast report sparked online backlash, with watchdog organization Citizens for Ethics tweeting: “FYI: the billionaire owner of Chick-fil-A, which promised to stop donating to anti-LGBT causes last year, is participating in a dark money operation fighting to keep the Equality Act from passing.”
