Electric Vehicle Charging Stations in Milpitas

As Teslas are made a few exits up the 880 freeway north of Milpitas, electric vehicles have become very popular in the area. Travelers often want to know where they can charge up their electric car, and may have preferences as to the type of charger. You can also view the full map on Google.

I have arranged each type of electric vehicle charging station by its location, north to south. (Fremont border to San Jose border.) As you can see, most are along McCarthy Blvd., which runs parallel to I-880 to its west. From I-880, take the Dixon Landing exit and head west (right), and then immediately left on McCarthy Blvd. and go south. (Note: McCarthy is an excellent alternative route should 880 have too much traffic. It begins as Fremont Blvd. up in Fremont, and becomes O’Toole in San Jose, ending on E. Brokaw, not far from the airport.

The Addition Game – Will Muppet Win Trip to Milpitas?

If Muppet Harry Monster correctly guesses what 3+1 is, he will win a trip to Milpitas, California.

In another episode, one of the Muppets correctly guesses 3+2, and wins a three-day, two-night, all expense paid trip to Milpitas, California. Still looking for that one.

Harry Wu: His Legacy

Releasing Wu was a major embarrassment to the PRC government. And, where in the world did Wu live? You guessed it: Milpitas. In fact, a very big deal was made to welcome Harry Wu home to Milpitas when he returned to the United States.

Dateline: 3/19/98, Updated 6/18/2023/

From his inauspicious Milpitas tract home, Harry Wu has been operating a center for international intrigue. Once again, the controversial Chinese human rights crusader has made his blow for the fate of imprisoned dissidents in China, and put Milpitas on the front page of papers around the world.

Harry’s target this time: China’s practice of reselling the organs of executed prisoners for transplant purposes here in the United States, in China, and in other countries.

This particular battle began when Harry received a phone call in his home office, crammed with computers and file cabinets. The caller had been contacted by a Mr. Wang Cheng Yong about helping him to sell human organs smuggled in from China. Knowing this was illegal, the caller had first contacted the Laogai Research Foundation, which tracks prison camps in China. He was given Harry’s number here in Milpitas.

After hearing the caller’s tale, Harry, posing as a director of a kidney dialysis clinic, contacted Wang, and made arrangements to meet him in Manhattan on February 13.

Wang eagerly offered kidneys, corneas, livers and lungs, “Whatever you want, I can give it to you.” Harry remembered thinking he felt like he was in some gruesome butcher shop.

Harry contacted the FBI immediately afterwards. They arranged for Wu’s original contact, Harry, and an FBI undercover agent to meet with Wang again on February 20.

Wang offered even pancreases and skin this time. He was accompanied by a Chinese citizen, Xingqui Fu, who lives in Flushing, New York. They were ready to deal. The exact details will come out in the men’s trial, as the FBI arrested the two on charges of conspiring to violate the federal law against selling human organs for profit.

China may have an “official” position, banning the sale of prisoners’ organs, but the trade flourishes with little restraint from the Chinese government. China has more than 65 capital offenses, executing an estimated 4,300 prisoners a year. With the demand for organs increasing as the risk in transplant operations decreases, the danger of unscrupulous sales of human organs rises.

Harry Wu knows firsthand the atrocious conditions of the Laogai. In 1960, Wu was imprisoned at the age of 23 for criticizing the Communist Party, and subsequently spent 19 years toiling in the factories, mines, and fields of the Laogai.

Historical trivia: Milpitas’ history as the constant butt of nationwide jokes

By Eric Shapiro, June 17, 2023, in The Milpitas Beat

The Milpitas Beat last Saturday caught up with Milpitas Historical Society President Bill Hare for a fun, quick chat about our city’s long yet forgotten history as the butt of endless jokes around the nation…

According to Hare, for about a century, a comparable cultural sentiment was in circulation about a “man from Milpitas…” No man in particular, just a general, fictional Milpitas resident…

The Milpitas Historical Society can trace the whole thing back to news articles from the 1860s. According to Hare, “In 1863, there was talk of California maybe leaving the union and becoming a slave state…There was enough Southern sympathy that there was talk of this. So there were various meetings going on [across the state]…”

At one such meeting, a pro-Union group from Milpitas brought in a banner (or, depending upon which accounts you believe, a kerosene wall projection powered by a lantern) that was visible to everyone there. Upon it were the words “As goes Milpitas, so goes the state.”

With a smile, Hare said, “People found this very amusing…” The attitude was, “You think a whole lot of yourself, don’t you, Milpitas?” Hare continued, “The Oakland Tribune was a big factor in this. They loved to make fun of Milpitas.”

Back in the late 1800s, the Oakland Tribune would sometimes run a serious article, then end it with a dose of mockery at Milpitas’ expense.

Hillview Court Apartment residents demand help

Hillview Court Apartment residents demand help amidst increasing concerns for safety

Rhoda Shapiro

When John Tuitasi’s car was broken into, he had no desire to call the police.

The car had been in the parking lot of the Hillview Court Apartments, located at 1000 Hillview Court in Milpitas.

But when somebody else at the property found out what had happened to Tuitasi’s car, they decided to reach out to police on their own. Later that night, the police went up to Tuitasi’s door and asked him questions about the break-in.

“The next day, somebody threw a rock through my window,” said Tuitasi. “So what good did it do to call the police?”

Since that day, Tuitasi has been harassed and has received numerous threats from the individual who broke into his car.

This is a common occurrence at the Hillview Court Apartments, where many fear repercussions for reporting incidents to the police…

Two Milpitas High teachers let go after accusations of inappropriate behavior toward students

Maria Denise Cuenca
May 18, 2023

Throughout the year 2022, investigations of two Milpitas High School teachers were conducted due to allegations of inappropriate behavior toward students. The two teachers investigated were Toby Anderson and Lance Brookner. Toby Anderson was a Life Skills and World History teacher at Milpitas High School and mostly taught 9th- and 10th-graders, while Lance Brookner taught Principles of Finance, Accounting, and Marketing/Customer Service to 11th- and 12th-graders. Through a public records request to MUSD, The Beat was able to gather information on the investigations of both teachers. Both instances are completely separate from one another and have no major correlation.

More ways for Keeping Cool at Milpitas Pools, Water Attractions, Nearby Beaches

Keeping Cool at Milpitas Pools, Water Attractions, Nearby Beaches

Got a letter from one of our faithful readers suggesting I hurry up and get a feature up on how to keep cool in or near Milpitas when the next heat wave hits. Suggestions here will range from where to find pools, walk along a beach, or find a ice cream treat. I welcome suggestions for additions to this page at any time.

A reminder: in hot weather check on elderly or infirm relatives and neighbors. My mother’s air conditioning failed, and she almost couldn’t think clearly enough to get herself to a cool, safe spot.

If you have screened windows, let the cold air in at night, then in the morning, close all windows and drapes to trap the cold air inside. An attic fan (From Home Depot for about $100-300) can do wonders by evacuating hot air out from between your ceiling and roof.

Let’s start with the obvious cool spots:

Take a Creek Hike

Big Basin Redwoods State Park
UPDATE ((May 27, 2021): Wildfire damages much of Big Basin Redwoods State Park. Fate of big trees unknown “The fire damaged the park’s headquarters, historic core and campgrounds,” said the statement. “Staff are currently assessing the damage cause by the fire to state park property and we do not know the number of acres burned within the park right now.” This park unit is partially open. Please take the time to read the information contained on this webpage to find out what is open and closed, and what COVID-19 guidelines are in place.

Coyote Watershed
Lots of small creeks come down from the east hills. The one parallel to Calaveras Road as it heads up into the hills is hikable. Might be poison oak, though, so wear long pants and long-sleeved shirt. The builder at Piedmont Rd has made a rather pretty artificial stream complete with waterfall. I’m not sure if the general public will be allowed to get into the water there or not. Again, don’t drink the water. It comes from the duck ponds and horse ranches in the hills.

Guide to San Francisco Bay Area Creeks
In the old days, every neighborhood had a creek; the secret is they still do….

Penitencia Creek
Lined with big-leaf maple white alder, and western sycamore. Wild honey-suckle vines, the arroyo and red willow add to its lush plant life. The creek is shallow and slow in Alum Rock Park, so it is a nice place for small children to cool off. Do not let them drink the creek water, however.
