Coronavirus COVID-19 Updates for Milpitas

As the Coronavirus COVID-19 has hit our city and county particularly hard, I will use this post to keep you updated on important information you will need right here in town. Some posts here will be updated with extra links to Covid-19 information related to their usual topics.

COVID-19 Case Rates by City
Zoom in and click on “Milpitas.” Updated 9/1/2022. There has been a huge jump in Covid cases in Milpitas in the past couple of weeks, so I will be updating more often. This map summarizes counts and rates of cumulative COVID-19 cases by cities within Santa Clara County. Cities with higher rates of cases per 100,000 residents appear as a darker shade of blue than cities with lower rates of cases. Date above is the last I saw I checked, but not the last it changed. Do realize that if you drive outside our city borders, or people come to your home or business from other areas, you become part of of a far larger population, and your risk increases. Since this number is cumulative, assume that many of these people have recovered. Compare to other cities in Santa Clara County.

FIELD NAME MILPITAS COVID-19 CASES
Cumulative case count 14,918
Population 77,457
Rate per 100,000 people 19,260

Due to a significant and unresolved problem with the State of California’s CalREDIE reporting system, the County of Santa Clara Public Health Department, as well as county public health departments statewide, are experiencing significant underreporting of COVID-19 testing results. Because of this problem, the information presented in this dashboard/these dashboards since mid-July 2020 is incomplete. We will provide updates on the status of these reporting delays as soon as they are available. Additional information about these delays may be available from the State of California.

COVID-19 Cases and Deaths in all of Santa Clara County
The data on this dashboard provide a look at the number of new cases of COVID-19 and related deaths over time. A case is someone who tests positive for COVID-19 using viral testing performed in a lab. Deaths are listed separately for patients at Long Term Care Facilities because patients in these facilities are more isolated than the general public and represent a particularly vulnerable population. The Public Health Department closely tracks the number of cases and deaths that are being reported each day. Data on deaths will be updated on Fridays.

Most Recent Santa Clara County Risk Reduction Order

ORDER OF THE HEALTH OFFICER OF THE COUNTY OF SANTA CLARA REQUIRING USE OF FACE COVERINGS INDOORS BY ALL PERSONS
DATE OF ORDER: August 2, 2021 This Order is made in light of the recent significant increase in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations in Santa Clara County (“County”), due primarily to the Delta variant of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. Emerging evidence indicates that the Delta variant is more transmissible than prior variants of the virus, may cause more severe illness, and that even fully vaccinated individuals can spread the virus to others. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) now both recommend that all persons—regardless of vaccination status—wear face coverings indoors. Vaccination remains the best and most effective tool in preventing COVID-19 and its harms; evidence shows that even against the Delta variant, fully vaccinated individuals have substantial protection against severe illness, hospitalization, and death. In considering options to stem the rapid increase in COVID-19 transmission, a continued increase in the proportion of the population vaccinated is the best measure available. However, universal indoor use of face coverings is the least disruptive and most immediately impactful additional measure to take.

Recipes for Weight Loss and Heart-Healthy Eating

Good nutrition is one way to reduce your risk of developing heart disease and stroke. But in times of Covid-19, being stuck in the house, it is easy to forget to eat less and move more.

You might be snacking on cookies rather than something more nutritious. Try cherry tomatoes or grapes  for a healthful snack. Break kale into chip-sized pieces, toss with some olive oil, and spread on a cookie sheet. If you are ok with salt, sprinkle some on. Bake at 400° for 4 minutes. Voila! Healthful chips, and they taste better than you’d expect for kale.

Our Watershed

The Coyote Creek Water Shed

Watersheds are nature’s way of dividing up the landscape. A watershed is the land area that catches rain or other runoff and drains to specific wetlands, streams, rivers, and reservoirs. Runoff from every home or business ultimately makes its way to a creek or channel. That’s why everyone somehow contributes to flooding even if it happens miles away. Creeks and street water in Milpitas flow into the Coyote Creek and then into the San Francisco Bay.

Coyote Watershed Fast Facts
The county’s largest watershed, it extends from the urbanized valley floor upward to the vast natural areas of the Mt. Hamilton range. Coyote Creek, its main waterway, is the longest creek in the county. Resources for teachers and students.

Fixing Anderson Dam is a priority for Valley Water
In 2019, Valley Water produced a draft of a video depicting a worst-case scenario should a filled-to-capacity Anderson Dam fail in the event of a major earthquake. Valley Water embarks on Anderson Dam project after years of unexpected delays. The original plan –– to add buttressing and materials up and downstream to reinforce the dam –– would take roughly three years and come with a $250 million price tag. But in 2016, that number grew after the district conducted geotechnical borings of the surrounding soil and found evidence of seismic activity in two nearby fault lines previously thought to be inactive.

Water Quality

Water Quality Report: Consumer Confidence Report
The City of Milpitas is pleased to provide our customers with pertinent information about the quality of our drinking water. This annual water quality report tells you where our water comes from, what our tests show about it, and what is in it.

City of Milpitas Water Quality Report 2021
As mandated by law, each year, on or before July 1, the City of Milpitas is required to provide all of its water customers a copy of the CCR. The CCR provides water quality information and compares the quality of your water to established Federal and State drinking water standards. We encourage you to view this report as it provides information about the source and quality of the drinking water delivered to you.

In an effort to be better stewards of the environment, the City is no longer distributing paper copies of the CCR. The reports will instead be made available online. If you wish to obtain a paper copy of the 2021 CCR, you may pick one up from the Milpitas City Hall building located at 455 E. Calaveras Blvd., Milpitas, CA 95035. For any questions you may have, please contact us through our email at: MilpitasCCR@milpitas.gov.

The City of Milpitas is approaching buildout, and open spaces are being converted to domestic and irrigation type uses, changing diurnal flow patterns and water needs. In addition, redevelopment of older industrial/commercial areas to high density residential is being considered as part of the Midtown Specific Plan.

Provides Milpitas with Hetch Hetchy water. (Note to newcomers: Hetch Hetchy water is considered the finest!)

Hetch Hetchy Reservoir and Water System
Milpitas gets most of its drinking water through the San Francisco PUC. The Hetch Hetchy Project supplies water and power to the City of San Francisco and surrounding Bay Area communities, and regulates stream flow in the Upper Tuolumne River, Cherry Creek, and Eleanor Creek.

Where Your Water Comes From
Groundwater and local surface water is the county’s original source of water supply. Local rainfall and runoff flows into reservoirs for storage and blending with imported water. The water is released into creeks and ponds to augment natural percolation and maintain groundwater levels. Some of the local surface water is processed at drinking water treatment plants. The treated water is sold to local water retailers such as San Jose Water Company, who use their own distribution systems to serve customers. Water pumped from the groundwater aquifer through wells is used by private well owners, farmers, and water retailers.

Milpitas Waste Water Treatment

San Jose / Santa Clara Water Pollution Control Plant
The San Jose/Santa Clara Water Pollution Control Plant is one of the largest advanced wastewater treatment facilities in California. Advocacy

Milpitas works to create its first ever Women’s Task Force
July 18, 2022. For the past two years, the Milpitas City Council has worked toward creating the City’s first-ever Women’s Task Force. The idea of a Women’s Task Force in Milpitas started when the California Commission on the Status of Women and Girls (CCSWG) announced their $5 million grant program. The City of Milpitas applied for and received $25,000 to create a task force that implements the principles of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). This past April, the money was given to Milpitas at the CCSWG conference in Sacramento.

After receiving the money to implement CEDAW in the City, the Council adopted Ordinance 306, a move toward establishing the Women’s Task Force. The task force will give Milpitas the resources it needs to face issues affecting many women in the city. These include but are not limited to: domestic violence, wage gaps, and accessible childcare.

Councilmember Karina Dominguez, who is active in helping to create the Women’s Task Force, stated in an interview, “This is the first time in the City of Milpitas that we have seen policy, resources, and money put down in order to bring women’s issues in the forefront.”
