Keeping Cool at Milpitas Pools, Water Attractions, Nearby Beaches

Got a letter from one of our faithful readers suggesting I hurry up and get a feature up on how to keep cool in or near Milpitas when the next heat wave hits. Suggestions here will range from where to find pools, walk along a beach, or find a ice cream treat. I welcome suggestions for additions to this page at any time.

A reminder: in hot weather check on elderly or infirm relatives and neighbors. My mother’s air conditioning failed, and she almost couldn’t think clearly enough to get herself to a cool, safe spot.

If you have screened windows, let the cold air in at night, then in the morning, close all windows and drapes to trap the cold air inside. An attic fan (From Home Depot for about $100-300) can do wonders by evacuating hot air out from between your ceiling and roof.

Let’s start with the obvious cool spots:

Public Swimming Pools

Recreational Swimming
Milpitas Sport Center

Pools are fully supervised by lifeguards. The fee a $2.00 is charged to all entering on the pool deck. Children ages 7 years and under are required to be accompanied by an adult, 18 years or older. Infants and toddlers must wear specialized swim diapers.

Both residents and non-residents are welcome to become members of the Milpitas Sports Center. Best Beaches near San Jose California
Even though the southern shore of San Francisco Bay doesn’t have sandy beaches, some of the best beaches in California are on the Pacific Ocean just a short drive away from San Jose. The closest beaches are about 45 minutes away in Santa Cruz. From Santa Cruz, it’s a short drive north on Highway 1 to unique cove beaches near the town of Davenport. More sandy options near Santa Cruz include the beaches in Aptos and Capitola.

Take a Creek Hike

Big Basin Redwoods State Park
UPDATE ((May 27, 2021): Wildfire damages much of Big Basin Redwoods State Park. Fate of big trees unknown “The fire damaged the park’s headquarters, historic core and campgrounds,” said the statement. “Staff are currently assessing the damage cause by the fire to state park property and we do not know the number of acres burned within the park right now.” This park unit is partially open. Please take the time to read the information contained on this webpage to find out what is open and closed, and what COVID-19 guidelines are in place.

Coyote Watershed
Lots of small creeks come down from the east hills. The one parallel to Calaveras Road as it heads up into the hills is hikable. Might be poison oak, though, so wear long pants and long-sleeved shirt. The builder at Piedmont Rd has made a rather pretty artificial stream complete with waterfall. I’m not sure if the general public will be allowed to get into the water there or not. Again, don’t drink the water. It comes from the duck ponds and horse ranches in the hills.

Guide to San Francisco Bay Area Creeks
In the old days, every neighborhood had a creek; the secret is they still do….

Penitencia Creek
Lined with big-leaf maple white alder, and western sycamore. Wild honey-suckle vines, the arroyo and red willow add to its lush plant life. The creek is shallow and slow in Alum Rock Park, so it is a nice place for small children to cool off. Do not let them drink the creek water, however.

Which City Has The Most Unpredictable Weather?
Not Milpitas! San Francisco’s weather patterns are unusual as compared to the rest of the country (September has historically been San Francisco’s warmest month, for instance). But they’re predictably unusual, at least on a day-to-day (if not necessarily hour-to-hour) basis. And San Francisco, like the rest of the West Coast, rarely gets severe weather. In other words, it is fairly easy for the weather forecast you see on TV to be correct.

Best Place to Live: the Great Town of Milpitas, California

Maps of California, showing location of Santa Clara County, and the county showing location of Milpitas.

Why is Milpitas a Best Place to Live?

Milpitas is a fair sized, suburban city that is situated between San Jose and Fremont, but has retained that small town feel, making us a best place to live. City Council and School Board meetings are social events, and are currently online during Covid-19, so even if you live elsewhere, you can still attend. Politically, we tend to vote Democrat, but every nuance of progressive politics is evident.

Being in Northern California, it is cooler than the southern end of the state, yet because of the Silicon Valley mountains that block the worse weather, it tends to be “nice” year around so heating and cooling bills are trivial. Frost is rare, and it never snows in the valley. Heat is seldom unbearable. Prevailing winds are typically toward the eastern hills, so if grass fires start there, they tend to go away from the town. Landslides are not a concern.

Water – Safety & Sources in Milpitas

The City purchases and distributes water from Valley Water treatment plants, as well as from San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC). Before making its way to your tap, your drinking water is treated and tested to ensure its safety. Valley Water and SFPUC are ensuring the water supplied to the City is of the highest possible quality meeting or exceeding all federal and state drinking water standards.

Our Watershed

The Coyote Creek Water Shed
Watersheds are nature’s way of dividing up the landscape. A watershed is the land area that catches rain or other runoff and drains to specific wetlands, streams, rivers, and reservoirs. Runoff from every home or business ultimately makes its way to a creek or channel. That’s why everyone somehow contributes to flooding even if it happens miles away. Creeks and street water in Milpitas flow into the Coyote Creek and then into the San Francisco Bay.

Adopt A Creek
This program offers citizen participation in creek cleaning projects within Santa Clara County. Helping with this program is a great way for schools, community organizations and private companies to demonstrate their concern about the environment. Santa Clara Valley Water District.

Moving Mountains at Calaveras Dam Replacement

Coyote Watershed Fast Facts
The county’s largest watershed, it extends from the urbanized valley floor upward to the vast natural areas of the Mt. Hamilton range. Coyote Creek, its main waterway, is the longest creek in the county. Resources for teachers and students.

Fixing Anderson Dam is a priority for Valley Water
In 2019, Valley Water produced a draft of a video depicting a worst-case scenario should a filled-to-capacity Anderson Dam fail in the event of a major earthquake. Valley Water embarks on Anderson Dam project after years of unexpected delays. The original plan –– to add buttressing and materials up and downstream to reinforce the dam –– would take roughly three years and come with a $250 million price tag. But in 2016, that number grew after the district conducted geotechnical borings of the surrounding soil and found evidence of seismic activity in two nearby fault lines previously thought to be inactive.

S.F. Public Utilities Commission
Provides Milpitas with Hetch Hetchy water. (Note to newcomers: Hetch Hetchy water is considered the finest!)
Milpitas gets most of its drinking water through the San Francisco PUC. The Hetch Hetchy Project supplies water and power to the City of San Francisco and surrounding Bay Area communities, and regulates stream flow in the Upper Tuolumne River, Cherry Creek, and Eleanor Creek.

Where Your Water Comes From
Groundwater and local surface water is the county’s original source of water supply. Local rainfall and runoff flows into reservoirs for storage and blending with imported water. The water is released into creeks and ponds to augment natural percolation and maintain groundwater levels. Some of the local surface water is processed at drinking water treatment plants. The treated water is sold to local water retailers such as San Jose Water Company, who use their own distribution systems to serve customers. Water pumped from the groundwater aquifer through wells is used by private well owners, farmers, and water retailers.

News & Legal Action Regarding Homelessness in Milpitas

Use of Rights of Way and Public Property Ordinance (aka Camping Ban) – We can do better!
By Rob Jung – Board President of Hope for the Unhoused – September 14, 2022
Many of the unhoused are trying to get off the streets. They don’t want to be there, but their circumstances limit what they can do. Imposing fines and jail time because they have no place to go adds to the hurdles for them to get back into society. This “kick them when they are down” approach actually worsens the situation for our unhoused, which is counterproductive to the community goal of getting them off our streets.
