Enjoy some of our galleries at these links:

Some definitions for photos entered for judging:

  • General-A and General-B: Members choose their category (A=advanced or B=beginner). Almost anything goes. Evaluation will be based primarily on pictorial content with the only restriction being that subject matter should not be offensive to the average adult audience.
  • Monochrome: black and white, sepia, or any other shades of one color and white
  • Travel: Expresses the feeling of a time and place, and portray a land, its people, or a culture in its natural state. Techniques that add to, relocate, replace or remove any element of the original image, except by cropping, are not permitted. Techniques that enhance the presentation of the image, without changing the photo travel content, are permitted. All adjustments must appear natural. Titles are part of the story and will be read during judging. They should be an accurate description of the subject.
  • Creative is an image of altered reality, produced by use of tools or techniques to manipulate the image during any part of the work flow. Emphasis in this Division is placed upon creativity and originality.
  • Mobile images must be taken and edited on a mobile device, such as a smart phone or tablet. Images taken on a GoPro or a drone would be in this category unless the topic fits well in one of the others.

Evidence used to update the list of underlying medical conditions that increase a person’s risk of severe illness from COVID-19~Updated March 29, 2021
This list is a living document that will be periodically updated by CDC, and it could rapidly change as the science evolves. Severe illness from COVID-19 is defined as hospitalization, admission to the ICU, intubation or mechanical ventilation, or death. Find out just how likely you are to get a severe case of COVID-19 because of underlying conditions here.

MOA of Messenger RNA-Based COVID-19 Vaccines
This animation demonstrates the mechanism of action of Messenger RNA based vaccines for COVID-19 (SARs-CoV-2) from companies such as Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, and Arcturus Therapeutics.

How mRNA Vaccines Work – Simply Explained
mRNA vaccines have to potential to end the COVID19 pandemic. How do they work? Are they safe? And how could they’ve been developed so quickly? The main idea of mRNA vaccines is to trick our bodies to produce part of a virus. This kickstarts our immune response, without getting us sick. All that’s needed is a part of the virus’s DNA or RNA, packaged into mRNA. Cool!

What is my BMI?
Since one of the more likely dangerous underlying conditions is obesity, defined as a BMI equal to or greater than 30, you may want to calculate your BMI on this CDC page. Those with BMI greater than or equal to 40 can be vaccinated at this time.

Wildlife Education Programs
Because our valley provides excellent homes for many species of wildlife, you can find anything from a tiny hummingbird to a large raccoon in our backyards and city parks. Despite the fact that your yard supports wildlife so well, problems occasionally arise with them living so close to people. For example, what would you do with a bird your cat brought to you? Hopefully the suggestions will help prevent potential problems and help us coexist with our wild neighbors.

Coyote Ridge: Treasure of the Santa Clara Valley
Imagine a place of sweeping vistas, singing grass, wildflowers, eagles, falcons, coyotes, but few people. All this within view of the third largest metropolis in America. All this two miles from an interstate highway. The hills on the eastern side of the Santa Clara Valley, known collectively as the Diablo Range, are made up of a rock known as serpentinite.

We will partner with other wildlife organizations and government agencies to research and link the wildlife corridors to create a San Francisco Bay Area Wildlife Corridor to ensure the protection of the region’s rich natural heritage.

What is a habitat conservation plan (HCP)?
An HCP is a document that meets federal Endangered Species Act (ESA) requirements and enables local agencies to allow projects and activities to occur in endangered species’ habitats. In exchange, those projects and activities must incorporate HCP-prescribed measures to avoid, minimize, or compensate for adverse effects on natural communities and endangered species.

Youth Science Institute
A natural science museum serving Santa Clara County in Northern California with three sites, the Youth Science Institute focuses on the delicate interrelationship of people with the natural world.

Wild Animals

Bats
The ones most common in Santa Clara County are the pallid bat, the Yuma bat, the Mexican free-tailed bat, the red bat, the hoary bat, the big brown bat, the silver haired bat, and the canyon bat. The vast majority of bats are insectivores and the rest feed on fruit, mice, and small vertebrates. Because so many bats consume insects, they are very valuable in keeping the insect population down. One bat can catch hundreds of insects in an hour.

Bay Area Puma Project
The Bay Area Puma Project will make a major contribution by gathering and linking habitat and physiology data. The project includes an advisory group of puma researchers and conservationists who will provide input and guidance over the course of the study.

Bobcat
This cute little bobcat came wandering up to our house about a month ago in the morning while my brother and I were watching TV.

California wild pig population far larger than imagined
There are wild pigs in the east hills and in some of the regional parks ringing Silicon Valley.

The Coyote
A pack of coyotes can frequently be heard howling in the east hills. A pack of coyotes is frequently seen and heard in Ben Rodgers Park, where they raid the garbage cans and terrorize pets left outside at night.

Living with California Mountain Lions
Generally, mountain lions are calm, quiet and elusive. But once in awhile, Milpitans living along the east hillside have spotted one in their back yards.

Opossum
If you see an opossum by the side of the road between March and September, check to see if it’s a female with babies in its pouch. When they are four or five inches long, they start leaving the pouch to ride on their mother’s back. When they have reached seven to eight inches body length, they leave the parent to make their own way in the world.

Raccoons
In urban settings, in addition to feeding on backyard fruits, nuts, and vegetables, they scavenge from garbage cans and compost piles. Pet food left outside overnight ranks high as a food resource and then, of course, some people deliberately provide food for raccoons.

San Francisco Garter Snake
Most who appreciate wildlife will agree that the San Francisco Garter Snake is California’s most beautiful snake. The bright orange head, combined with dazzling black and red stripes, is impressive enough, but the pale stripes and belly are washed with the most delicate turquoise. It is just a wonderful serpent.

Squirrels
For a majority of Californians, the tree squirrels in our neighborhoods will be one or more of three species: the native western gray squirrel (Sciurus griseus), the introduced eastern gray squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis), and the introduced eastern fox squirrel (Scirus niger). A good way to tell western gray from the others is to look at the color of the fur on the face.

Tarantula
Tarantulas found in Milpitas are quiet creatures that live in burrows. Their bite is no more dangerous to people than the sting of a bee. Their size and hairiness, however, can give people a fright.

Western Diamondback Rattlesnake
These serpents should be considered armed and dangerous with a well-developed fang and poison delivery system.

Tax Considerations/Strategies for PPP loans and Grants

Paycheck Protection Program (PPP)

by Karen A. Hahn, CPA, Inc

PPP #1:

  • For those of you who received a PPP during the first round April – June of 2020, THE MONEY YOU SPENT FROM YOUR PPP LOAN WILL BE TAX DEDUCTIBLE!!!
  • Be aware that California has not conformed to this non-taxable provision. The forgiveness of the loan will be taxable on California tax returns.
  • There is a new simplified loan application for loans below $150,000. (This will apply to PPP 1 &2.) Form 3508EZ One page no documentation required.
  • Long form is 3508, requires documentation to be attached.

PPP #2:

Same as original PPP Loan:

  • The loan amount will be 2.5 times your monthly payroll (for most)
  • Terms: 1%, 5-year maturity (loans before 6/5/2020 have a 2-year maturity)

New terms on PPP2 loan: Your business is qualified to take a “second draw” on the PPP loan if you meet the following requirements:

  • For businesses with no more than 300 employees per physical location
  • $2 million maximum loan amount
  • You must prove you have had a decrease in gross sales of at least 25% for at least one quarter in 2020 (as compared to the same quarter in 2019).
  • Restaurants & Hospitality businesses can borrow 3.5 times their payroll amount
  • If you did not get a PPP loan the first time, you can apply for BOTH draws!
  • If your first PPP loan was lower than 2.5 of your payroll, you may be able to get the additional amount with your 2nd loan!
  • In addition to payroll and rent expenses being qualified expenses, you now will be able to include COVID related expenses! This means personal protection gear, supplies necessary to meet CDC safety compliance, disinfectant supplies and even certain qualified software will be included for forgiveness.
  • There is a 90-day window between your original PPP loan funding and the new application. There is also some verbiage that suggests you must have used up your original loan before you can apply for the new loan. While we don’t have any guidance on this, it simply means you have to justify that you spent the money on payroll & rent (and COVID expenses?) before you can apply for the 2nd loan. (This may not be the same as proving the bank account you had the PPP loan deposited into is zero. Don’t presume that account must be zeroed to qualify. Let’s wait for more guidance.)

IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN APPLYING FOR PPP2, YOUR MAIN PRIORITY RIGHT NOW SHOULD
BE GETTING YOUR 2020 BOOKS UP TO DATE.

This will help you get the information needed to apply.

  • EIDL Loans no longer have to be deducted for the PPP loan to ascertain forgiveness.

GRANTS

  • Some business have received grants from different entities such as professional organizations and cities. In order to determine if these grants are taxable, one has to look to the original grant paperwork. How was the grant money calculated? If it was meant to be a replacement of income, then it is most likely taxable.

OTHER ITEMS on the Economic Relief Bill:

Economic Impact Payments

If you receive a stimulus with the last round ($1200 per person), you will most likely receive the new stimulus of $600 per person (plus $600 for dependents under age 17). Here are the qualifications:

  • Single income below $75,000; Head of Household income below $112,500 and Married joint income below $150,000. If your income is above these thresholds, the amount you receive will be phased out.
  • Payment will be based on your income on your 2019 tax return.
  • Social Security & Veterans will receive the $600 automatically.
  • You may not receive the payment in the same fashion as the last one. If you did not get direct deposit or paper check, you may get a check or debit card in the mail.
  • If you do not receive the payment & you are eligible, you will get the money as a tax refund when you file your 2020 return. (Recovery Rebate Credit)
  • You can go to Get My Payment to get information about your first and second stimulus payments.
  • You will not be able to change checking information on-line. If your bank account has changed, you may receive a paper check or can claim the recovery rebate credit when you file your 2020 return.

Unemployment

  • Unemployment benefits have been extended for 11 weeks. These benefits also include an additional $300 per week through 3/14/2021.
  • Pandemic Unemployment Insurance for self-employed or subcontractors will also be able to collect unemployment for another 11 weeks. The $300 additional pay also applies.
  • You do not need to do anything if you already have an open claim. If you have recently become unemployed, you should open a claim.
  • Maximum weeks of unemployment is extended to 50 weeks.
  • I to recommend business owners do NOT collect unemployment if you are eligible for PPP2. It’s expected the loan process will be much quicker and you should use the PPP loan to pay yourself.

Payroll Tax Deferral

  • If you took the payroll tax deferral, you have until 12/31/21 to pay the taxes back. (It had been 4/30/21.)
  • Self-employed individuals can get a social security credit if they contracted COVID19.

Paid Sick Leave Credits

  • If the employer pays an employee for paid sick and family leave, you can use payroll tax credits through 3/31/21.

Employee Retention Credit

A payroll tax credit can be taken if you experience a 20% decline in gross receipts (was 50% decline) from January 1 to June 31, 2021. The tax credit applies to:

  • A credit equal to 70% of gross wages, up to a maximum of $10,000 in wages per quarter (was per year). This means up to a $7000 payroll tax credit per employee.
  • This is only for employers who did NOT get a PPP loan.

Rent Assistance & Eviction Moratorium

  • The eviction moratorium was extended until 1/31/2021.
  • Eligible renters can receive up to 12 months assistance to pay for rent, utilities and unpaid rent or unpaid utilities. This assistance is tax free.
  • States will be responsible for distribution of these funds. Contact your local housing authority for assistance.
