What I do to avoid telemarketers

For my land line, I have bought this phone system at Staples for about $100: AT&T 2-Handset Cordless/Corded Telephone, Silver/Black (CL84207) with Answering System & Smart Call Blocker, Silver/Black with 2 Handsets. Its built-in software blocks telemarketing calls, but also allows you to whitelist friends by asking them their name and to hit #.

On our cell phones we did two things. First I downloaded the free ringtone: Silence. I then made it my default ringtone. I gave all people and businesses I don’t mind hearing from a sounding ringtone. Look on YouTube on how to install a new ringtone on your cell phone. So that telemarketers can’t even get that far, I got the app from AT&T to protect my phone from fraudulent calls. Their software selection here works on both iPhones and Android system cell phones.

What’s up with the National Do Not Call Registry?
The Do Not Call Data Book also shows that many of the calls reported at donotcall.gov are robocalls. Just keep in mind that pre-recorded sales calls are illegal whether you’re on the Registry or not unless a company has your written permission to call you that way.

California net neutrality bill bends to telco, cable wishes
Senate bill 822 was approved by the senate energy, utilities and communications committee mid-April, 2018, on a party line vote, with the condition that undisclosed changes, negotiated behind closed doors, would be made. Those amendments were finally released, and the result is fewer net neutrality enforcement options.

Elmwood Jail

Fentanyl overdoses reported at Santa Clara County jails
One inmate died Saturday at the Main Jail; 13 others at Elmwood Correctional Facility were treated at area hospitals

SAN JOSE – As the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office contends with a spike in fentanyl overdoses at the Elmwood Correctional Facility in Milpitas, the medical examiner-coroner’s office has identified a 44-year-old inmate who died after apparently coming into contact with the opioid last week at the Main Jail in San Jose.

Deputies at the Main Jail were conducting welfare checks around 8:20 a.m. on March 11 when they found 44-year-old Roland Wrigley unresponsive on the floor of his cell, Sgt. Michael Low said in a statement.

Wrigley was given CPR as well as Narcan, a medicine used to counteract an opioid overdose, but he was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later, Low said.

The in-custody death follows a “substantial amount” of fentanyl overdoses last week at the Elmwood Correctional Facility, Low said. The first two cases were reported on March 8, with a total of 13 inmates eventually being treated at hospitals.

COVID vaccinations to expand for jailed, unhoused people in Santa Clara County
PUBLISHED: February 25, 2021 at 1:36 p.m. | UPDATED: February 25, 2021 at 1:38 p.m.
Expansion occurs alongside various Bay Area efforts to ramp up vaccine access in jails, encampments, homeless shelters.
Santa Clara County, however, is going beyond that, moving into Phase 1B, Tier 2 of the state’s vaccination priority framework, which offers broad vaccine eligibility to incarcerated and unhoused people, as supplies allow.

Santa Clara County inmates report unsafe conditions, go on hunger strike as COVID-19 cases soar
Surge of coronavirus cases surfaced this week in a single housing unit, authorities and inmates confirm
PUBLISHED: January 16, 2021
Inmates in Santa Clara County’s jails are on a hunger strike as cases of COVID-19 rage through the correctional system amid reports of unsanitary, unsafe and cruel conditions.
As of Jan. 14, there were 109 active cases of COVID-19 among county inmates, a slight dip from a high of 127 earlier in the week.
The report included first-person stories from those inside the jails detailing unsafe and negligent conditions.
“(I am housed in a) dorm setting at M-8-C Elmwood. There are approximately 65 beds and approximately 61 beds full,” said one anonymous inmate in the report. “Last week, every bed was full. The bunks are 2 1/2 feet apart. No room at all for social distancing – if your neighbor coughs, it goes right in your face.”

“The food is a little better but, man! Food is one reason to stay out of jail if you like good food.”

Hillview Court – Shelter in former long stay hotel

The unhoused find shelter at Hillview Court Apartments in Milpitas
By Rhoda Shapiro March 2, 2021
Hillview Court is unique in that it’s an affordable community, made possible by funding from the CARES Act. Last year, $846 million in funding was put toward California’s Project Homekey in an effort to help people without homes get off the street. Across California, nearly 100 buildings were purchased and converted into apartments to provide long-term housing for those experiencing homelessness.x

News & Legal Action Regarding Homelessness in Milpitas

Use of Rights of Way and Public Property Ordinance (aka Camping Ban) – We can do better!
By Rob Jung – Board President of Hope for the Unhoused – September 14, 2022
Many of the unhoused are trying to get off the streets. They don’t want to be there, but their circumstances limit what they can do. Imposing fines and jail time because they have no place to go adds to the hurdles for them to get back into society. This “kick them when they are down” approach actually worsens the situation for our unhoused, which is counterproductive to the community goal of getting them off our streets.

Bridge Housing
We are celebrating 40 years of service in 2020 and are proud to be the service provider for the City of San Jose’s recently opened Bridge Housing Communities (BHC). Each BHC provides interim housing opportunities to unhoused single adults in a safe, private, and secure environment.
