What I do to avoid telemarketers

For my land line, I have bought this phone system at Staples for about $100: AT&T 2-Handset Cordless/Corded Telephone, Silver/Black (CL84207) with Answering System & Smart Call Blocker, Silver/Black with 2 Handsets. Its built-in software blocks telemarketing calls, but also allows you to whitelist friends by asking them their name and to hit #.

On our cell phones we did two things. First I downloaded the free ringtone: Silence. I then made it my default ringtone. I gave all people and businesses I don’t mind hearing from a sounding ringtone. Look on YouTube on how to install a new ringtone on your cell phone. So that telemarketers can’t even get that far, I got the app from AT&T to protect my phone from fraudulent calls. Their software selection here works on both iPhones and Android system cell phones.

Directory Assistance
Free Directory Assistance for Cell Phones
You can get directory assistance on your cell phone (or land line) at 1-800-FREE 411 (or 1-800-373-3411). And it’s free. Add this number to your cell phone now, before you actually need it. The service is voice activated and offers the option to connect the call. Of course, nothing is entirely free, so be prepared to listen to a brief audio advertisement. For more details, visit Snopes.

Calling Bargains
A comprehensive telecom resource, providing industry news, consumer info and advice, as well as reviews for a broad array of telecom products and services with an emphasis on low cost calling solutions including 1+ long distance, Internet phone service, cell phone plans, conference call and more.

Do Not Call Registry
Most telemarketers cannot call your telephone number if it is in the National Do Not Call Registry. You can register your home and mobile phone numbers for free. Your registration will be effective for five years. File a complaint here.

What’s up with the National Do Not Call Registry?
The Do Not Call Data Book also shows that many of the calls reported at donotcall.gov are robocalls. Just keep in mind that pre-recorded sales calls are illegal whether you’re on the Registry or not unless a company has your written permission to call you that way.

Best Place to Live: the Great Town of Milpitas, California

Maps of California, showing location of Santa Clara County, and the county showing location of Milpitas.

Why is Milpitas a Best Place to Live?

Milpitas is a fair sized, suburban city that is situated between San Jose and Fremont, but has retained that small town feel, making us a best place to live. City Council and School Board meetings are social events, and are currently online during Covid-19, so even if you live elsewhere, you can still attend. Politically, we tend to vote Democrat, but every nuance of progressive politics is evident.

Being in Northern California, it is cooler than the southern end of the state, yet because of the Silicon Valley mountains that block the worse weather, it tends to be “nice” year around so heating and cooling bills are trivial. Frost is rare, and it never snows in the valley. Heat is seldom unbearable. Prevailing winds are typically toward the eastern hills, so if grass fires start there, they tend to go away from the town. Landslides are not a concern.

Advocacy

Milpitas works to create its first ever Women’s Task Force
July 18, 2022. For the past two years, the Milpitas City Council has worked toward creating the City’s first-ever Women’s Task Force. The idea of a Women’s Task Force in Milpitas started when the California Commission on the Status of Women and Girls (CCSWG) announced their $5 million grant program. The City of Milpitas applied for and received $25,000 to create a task force that implements the principles of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). This past April, the money was given to Milpitas at the CCSWG conference in Sacramento.

After receiving the money to implement CEDAW in the City, the Council adopted Ordinance 306, a move toward establishing the Women’s Task Force. The task force will give Milpitas the resources it needs to face issues affecting many women in the city. These include but are not limited to: domestic violence, wage gaps, and accessible childcare.

Councilmember Karina Dominguez, who is active in helping to create the Women’s Task Force, stated in an interview, “This is the first time in the City of Milpitas that we have seen policy, resources, and money put down in order to bring women’s issues in the forefront.”
